August 17th X-Wing: Mercy Kill

Well, there you go.  Ben Skywalker broken heart?  Check.  Darth Krayt revealed?  Check.  Lack of faith in the Jedi by most people?  Check.  I guess we won’t get to see too much happen with all of this that’s happened – maybe something neat in Crucible will tie together the EU as we know it?

August 3rd – Fate of the Jedi: Conviction

Fate of the Jedi has been reading a little bit better than I thought it would.  I’ve been fine with the story so far, but seeing in Vortex that Abeloth is taking upon former loves of Luke (Callista and Akanah) is a little bit too much.  As much as I like the small worldness, I could see maybe one of them, but Akanah and the White Current adepts seem a bit too far stretched for me, based on how they have acted before.  Then again, they are kind of a welcoming bunch, but you wouldn’t expect them to be conned by Abeloth.  Unless Abeloth is that strong, which apparently she is.

July 17th – Fate of the Jedi: Backlash

kind of feel like Mara and Anakin should have said a little bit more when Luke and Ben in the Lake of Apparitions.  Maybe that’s just how the dead are though?  Also, I’m surprised it took this long for the Mandalorians to get into things.  Other than those questioning thoughts I have, I have been enjoying this.

July 1st – Fate of the Jedi: Outcast

So I need to go and correct pages read from my last post, and then come and fix this one.

I really enjoy Millennium Falcon.  James Luceno has some some good work for the Star Wars Universe, and it’s cool that he loves throwing his props to Brian Daley.  There’s nothing I really found to comment on that I don’t like etc, so this is a nice short post.  Thanks James, and I hope you get back into the EU some day.

May 14th – Legacy of the Force: Exile

Ok, so it’s only Karen Traviss’s novels that have that side story.  Denning and Allston work well writing in the same series together.  I also thought I read this book a little quicker than what I actually did, but oh well.  130 books over 17 months isn’t too shabby at all.

April 30th – Legacy of the Force: Betrayal

Come on Troy Denning!  Yes, B-Wings pack fire power, but they are not one of the most maneuverable starfighters in the Galaxy.  And if you’re having Luke think that, he knows they aren’t!

So yeah, I guess you do get some traces of a certain character going down a dark path.  If you don’t get it from the cover of Betrayal, well, you’re not good at paying attention.  I’m finally done with those bugs and get another major series.  The only thing I don’t particularly like, at least as far as I remember, is that each of the 3 authors has their own story line going and they didn’t seem to mesh too well together – not like in Fate of the Jedi.  I guess I’ll see if it is better than I thought.  I’m not saying they aren’t good as a whole, but you can tell 3 authors contributed rather than having 1 seemless storyline.

March 5th – Enemy Lines II – Rebel Stand

I wish Allston wrote more with Lando – he did a great job with YVH 1-1A and him talking (and in the second book).

The only other thing I have to say is “Operation Emperor’s Hammer”.  It’s that awesome, and without fail I laugh with victory whenever I re-read this book and it commences.

March 2nd – Enemy Lines I: Rebel Dream

Well, the big news lately is that of Aaron Allston passing away.  I wonder if it’s a coincidence that I’ll be reading one of his books next.  It’s a series I look forward too – due to the fact I know what has happened in them.  Plus, it has Wedge on the cover.  The EU has lost a pair of important authors now on my journey – Allston and of course A.C. Crispin who passed away in the fall.  I appreciate both of their contributions to Star Wars, and have written some stories that I’ve really enjoyed.  With all of the awesome (or hopefully awesomeness will come of it) news going on with new movies, the Disney acquisition/theme park thing, Clone Wars coming to Netflix (including season 6 which was unaired!), realizing you’ve lost these two individuals in the past 6 months takes away some of the joy.  I think it’s safe to say they’d want us as fans to appreciate what is happening and will happen, and know that they have made lasting contributions to the Star Wars universe.

Regarding Dark Journey – yeah, Jaina wants to go bad.  Even with the end, it still feels like she wants to stray away.  I’ll have to keep a lookout to see if anything else affects her and sways her one way or another.

November 17th – X-Wing: Starfighters of Adumar

Well, I was a bit sick and that threw me behind on reading Darksaber.  Along with the usual continuity issues that involve having these books written before the prequel movies, Luke is too clingy in this book.  He really seems to have taken a step back.  He was kind of getting this way in Children of the Jedi, but his whole “Don’t worry, I’ll protect you using my Jedi powers” was not a Luke Skywalker thing at all – it’s a pretty awful line and I wish it could be taken back.  I’m also not a fan of how he seems to think of himself as the person who destroyed the Suncrusher.  If you want to get technical, a black hole ripped it a part, and it was delivered there by Kyp Durron.  Sure, Luke okayed it, but come on!

Lastly, the big thing I don’t like about this book – Kevin J. Anderson cannot write space battles to save his life.  He really made it seem like they were starfighter battles.  They were really week.  But take aside those few complaints I have, and it’s a good book.  Yeah, the Luke thing is pretty big (and some of the Jedi feel a little too full of themselves or too unsure – they never got that happy medium where I would expect them to be after Exar Kun etc), but the rest of the story is good.
